a revelation was the durability and wit of Arthur Schwartz and Dorothy
Fields too-little-known score for A Tree Grows In Brooklyn
the standouts were Growing Pains, a wry bittersweet meditation
on growing up, and Refinement, a comic gem (done to a tee
by Ms Fraser) worthy of comparison with Adelaides Lament
from Guys And Dolls. Davis
Gainess intense vocal style is showcased in numbers from Paint Your
Wagon and The King And I. His unmiked They Call The Wind Maria
is particularly impressive. |
