One
of the high points of The Broadway Musicals of 1933, Mondays
season-opening concert at the Town Hall series Broadway By The Year was
Mark Coffins rendition of The Legend Of Mackie Messer,
the 1933 forerunner of Mack The Knife. Mr Coffin, a little-known
cabaret performer of exceptional interpretive savvy, delivered a sly,
sinister performance that was a dramatic tour-de force
Hearing the
Berlin classics Suppertime (powerfully sung by Ms Davis) and
Harlem On My Mind (performed by Ms Davis and Ms Testa) in
the context of their times, the spunk and vitality of Berlins early
30s songwriting stood out in brilliant relief. |
